Moana 2 (2024)

REVIEW

 review, science fiction

This much-anticipated sequel bursts onto the screen with vibrant energy, drawing audiences back into the enchanting world of Moana. The titular heroine has grown into a confident and stunning wayfinder, her beauty matched only by the dazzling visuals of the film. However, while the premise promises a thrilling journey, the film’s execution stumbles at times.

As Moana ventures into uncharted seas to uncover the island of Motufetu, she confronts a series of obstacles ranging from ferocious sea monsters to wacky coconut warriors. Her determination and bravery anchor the story, yet the overall narrative lacks suspense. The outcome feels predictable, as the writers—Jared Bush, Dana Ledoux Miller, and Bek Smith—stick to tried-and-tested tropes of an adventure saga.

Directors David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller ensure that the action and thrill tick all the expected boxes, but they also crowd the plot with extraneous characters and subplots. While the film retains its charm, its momentum drags, especially in the middle portions where Moana’s journey feels less organic and more like a checklist of quirky encounters. Being a musical adventure, the story’s rhythm often slows, weighed down by songs that don’t always elevate the narrative. It’s only during the climactic scenes that the film finally picks up steam, delivering a high-energy conclusion befitting its nautical setting.

Still, 'Moana 2' dazzles visually, with animation that surpasses not just its predecessor but many other films in the genre, in both scope and detail. The ocean, teeming with life and colour, becomes a character in itself, reflecting Disney’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of animated storytelling. Each frame is a masterpiece, offering a kaleidoscope of imagination and artistry that begs to be experienced on the big screen.

Auli’i Cravalho once again shines as Moana, her voice infusing the character with warmth, strength, and a touch of vulnerability that makes her journey relatable. Dwayne Johnson’s Maui brings humour and charm to the narrative, though the writing doesn’t allow him much evolution. The supporting cast performs admirably, even if their characters feel underutilised or unnecessary.

Musically, 'Moana 2' hits the right notes but stops short of being extraordinary. While Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina craft a rich soundscape, the songs lack the emotional resonance that made the original so unforgettable. Instead, the soundtrack opts for a practical, almost functional role within the story, delivering pleasant but unmemorable melodies.

Overall, 'Moana 2' is a visual spectacle that offers heartwarming performances and an enchanting aesthetic. Yet, it falls short of recapturing the magic of the original, weighed down by a sluggish pace and a lack of narrative innovation. It’s a steady, scenic voyage but one that occasionally drifts off course. Watch it for its breathtaking animation and lovable leads, rather than for the depth of its oceanic adventure.
